Seasons Change

Artist Statement: inspired by midcentury culture and retro ephemera, my collage work explores femininity and self-discovery against the backdrop of the American Southwest. I often pull the women depicted in my works from vintage advertisements and magazines that perpetuate negative stereotypes around women’s value and role in society. Against open skies, scenic landscapes, and the natural world, I hope to free these figures and offer them an altered legacy.

Maria Pianelli Blair is a writer and multidisciplinary artist based in New Jersey. Her fiction has been published in Gypsophila Magazine, swim press, two-headed press, Pile Press, Prosetrics Literary Magazine, and Blood+Honey. Her artwork has been published in Contemporary Collage Magazine; FEELS Zine; and 45th Parallel, among other publications, and nominated for a Best of the Net award.
